My trip to Singapore

On 22th July to 26th July,I went to Singapore with my parents, my cousin Peter and his mum. Since it was my first time to Singapore, I was very excited.

Day One: I arrived at Hong Kong International Airport at noon and met my cousin Peter and his mum, then we boarded the plane at about half past one. There is no time difference between Hong Kong and Singapore so we arrived there at about half past four.

On arrival, we took a taxi to Sentosa Island and stayed in a hotel called Beaufort. After that we put our luggage into our room , we left the hotel and took a free shuttle bus to Vivo City, which is a shopping centre. It had a food court and we had dinner there. I tried Singapore's national dish, La Sha, it was quite spicy but really delicious!

Day Two: After having breakfast in the hotel, we took a yellow-line shuttle bus to the Imbiah Station. We travelled by the mini metro to Waterfront Station. I laughed when I saw that the distance from Imbiah Station to Waterfront Station which was only 200 metres, it took us 20 seconds to arrive there, I could even see Imbiah Station from Waterfront Station!
Singapore Universal Studio is located at Waterfront Station. It was not too crowded inside so I could ride on the thrilling rollercoaster. Unforunately, the biggest and the most exciting rollercoaster was closed! I was so disapointed!

After having lunch, we returned to the theme park again to play on other rides, compared to the Japan's Universal Studio, it is much smaller. When I was leaving, I saw two members of staff at the entrance who kicked some rubbish to each other. In Singapore, if anyone throw rubbish, there is a penalty of 500 dollars. In the evening time, we went to Vivo City again and had dinner with my mum's previous company colleauges.

Day 3: We went to Imbiah Station again and there was some mini rides. Participants had to pay and lined up. We chose three rides, they were the car ride, magazip, and the shooting game. Firstly we rode on the car ride, I couldn't controll my car well and nearly crashed into others. You know, bumping into others would be really painful! I controlled well during the second time and it was fantastic! Then we went shooting in a gallery and there were 15 other participants. I got 68 marks and I was in the forth place. My cousin Peter only scored 22 marks but he was not the last. The worst partcipant only scored 2 marks and her face was shown on the screen and I thought she was really ashamed and embarrased.

The Magazip is the most wonderful ride of all. Firstly we walked up a hill and had to wear a lot of heavy equipment. Then we walked again up to a tower. This is the highest place on the hill. Participants have to follow the staff's instructions and the staff will help them to tie the equipment to the ropes. Partcipants only need to take a photo before they slid down to the beach under the hill( I think it is 60 metres high) and hold on tightly. My cousin and I were the last partcipants to slide down. While waiting, I saw other partcipants who joined the parajump. The workers used a rope to tie the participants heavy equipment. The first one was a teenager, who joined with his friends. He was very afraid that he didn't want to jump. All the other participants encouraged him and clapped and applauded him. Finally the staff pushed him and he jumped down safely with a smile. When we slid down and arrived at the beach, where we met our parents and left Sentosa Beach and set off to the city and stayed at Sheriton Hotel.

How to Have a Green Day

1.     Why shouldn’t buy anything you don’t really want or need?
It is because everything we buy is made using the earth’s resources in some way. If we don’t really need the things, we will waste the resources.
2.     What should we do with the old newspapers, jars and bottles?
We should take them to the nearest recycling point, local charity shop or give them to a jumble sale.
3.     When we are cold in the evening, what should we do?
We should put on a sweat, slippers, or socks. As soon as it gets dark, close the curtain to keep the warmth in.
4.     Why shouldn’t we take a bath? What should we do instead of taking a bath?
It is because we will waste a lot of water when we take a bath. We should take a shower rather than a bath.
5.     What should we do if it is cold at bed time?
We should try to do the following things:
Ÿ   Put on extra blanket on our bed.
Ÿ   Have a warm drink or snack
Ÿ   Use a hot water bottle
Ÿ   War warm pajamas
Ÿ   Wear some socks

6.     What should you do, if you don’t like sleeping in the dark?
We should use a night-light plug or a very low power light blub.
7.     How much does it cost you to have a green day?
No, it doesn’t cost any money to have a green day.

A letter to a friend

Hi Fred,

How are things going?

Recently I have joined a chess competition with my mate at school. The opponents were all very good at playing chess and I had to play really carefully. Luckily, I beat them finally. My mate Terry beat the others easily and I was really amazed by that!We have got a bag of candy and a golden medal as a prize. I received them yesterday and shared the candies with my classmates.

Our final examination is coming soon and the school had alreday carried out the pre-exam policy. Our formal lessons was conducted until 2:30 and we left the school and went home to do revision. The examination will commence from 11th of June to the 22nd of June. I will have to work extremely hard because I want to join the prize giving ceremony.

After examination is over, we are going to relax and play crazily. The school has already arranged some activities for us and I am sure we will enjoy them. In addition, we are planning to go to Shanghai to visit the exhibition held there. According to the news reports, the exhibition will close after 6 months and we want to take a look. But I am anxious that we might have to line up under the hot sun for a long period. It could be tiring and perhaps I might faint, I know that you have lived in Shanghai for a long period of time and I think you are familiar with the weather in Shanghai etc, so if we really do make the trip, please be a tour guide for us.

How about you life in Shanghai, is it cool, are you enjoying yourself? I know that you have won in a solo competition. You have got some book coupons and a trophy as a prize. Congratulations to you! Please work hard and win in next year and also make good use of the book coupons. I know that you resistant to read books but please have a try. You knowledge will increase if you do so.

Ok! It is late now and I have to go to bed. See you soon and please take care!

Best wishes,

Project

In secondary schools, there are lots of projects to do. Chinese, Maths, Integrated Science, Integrated Humanities, English etc. Usually these projects are indivual projects or group projects.

Teachers will set the deadline of the projects and ask the students to form themselves in groups. At my school, that's always happens. After forming a group, teachers are going to give you the title/instructions of the project and the group members have to start finding some useful information related to the title on websites, books, experts or other ways. Of course, you cannot directly copy and paste the information from the Internet and paste it on a piece of paper. If you do so, you will gain very low marks because nearly all students try to do this and how can the teachers give you high marks if all the students hand in a similar or even same projects to teachers?

Although I am only a secondary one student, I have completed some projects before. Now we will discuss about how to do a good group project. According to my experience, you have to find some classmates that you are fimiliar with ( It means that you have to know about the strengths and weaknesses of each group members). Then after forming groups you must write down the content page that what do you intend to do for this project.

Next, you have to discuss and assign jobs to each group members. If they are good at typing, let them type; if they are good at researching, let them research ; if they are good at interviewing others, let them do so, you must not assign jobs that the group members are not good at. If you do so, that will always waste his/her time.

A good project should invovles one or more content pages, an index, information about the topics, interviewing conversations ( opional ), a conclusion and group members' feelings. Group members have to set the content pages together in order to let all the members to know what they have to do, also always hold some meetings to see if there are any difficulties.

When you find any information on reliable websites or books, don't copy them directly, anaylise it and rewrite it again. Usually you can present the data in a passage form, but if you use charts and graphs, that will be easier for people to look at your data.

You can also set some questionaires to let other people fill in and symmaise the information into graphs. For interviewing conservations, you can find some well-known people and interview them. During the interview, ask them questions in a polite manner. You should always drop down the main points.

A conclusion is the most important element in the project, when your group has finished all the work, concluded the data in passage form. Marks would be deducted if you have not written a conclusion page. Pictures have also to be included in the conclusion. After writing a conclusion page, ask you members their feelings and write them down on the members' feelings part. You must write down the difficulties experienced during the project and how you solved any difficulties.

You must put down the sources of information and include the names of the books, websites, newspapers, people who helped you etc. Finally, you have to draw/design the cover page and the last page. You should use ordinary colour pens to colour the pictures and charts. ( Don't forget to write down your group members' names on the cover page!!)

You must hand in on time or earlier that will give a good impression to teacher that give you high marks. If you need do presentation, gather all the group members and discuss things that you have to talk. Avoid deplication or contradiction.

Speaking

Every day we will speak to people. Our parents, our classmates, our teachers and our friends. Maybe we will talk to them using a different language.

When we communicate with others, there are somethings you have to bear in mind. Firstly, when you speak, please look them directly in the eyes. This shows you are talking to them. Also they have to look at you directly to show respect.

Secondly, you should not talk very long, give a chance to the other people to speak. If you do this, I am sure you can talk for a very long time. Thirdly,we should not use foul language or insult others. That will make other people angry or cry so they would not be willing to talk to you in the future.

Fourthly, speak clearly and not too fast. Talk at an average speed so the listeners will understand you clearly.

If you engaged in a public speaking, you should look at the audiences, if you find that they are getting bored with your speech, try to make a funny joke to get back their attention. Also you should use body language to emphaise certain points. Of course the four points previously mentioned you should also use.

This is only rough outline of oral speaking. For more details, please ask the communication experts!!

Sports

Nowadays, there are plenty of sports in the world. Soccer, swimming, playing table tennis, badminton, volleyball, basketball, hockey, surfing, cycling etc.

We should choose at least one sport and keep doing it twice a week. Sports are useful and they are important to us. Doing exercise can prevent lots of problems occuring in your body and make you more healthier to prevent sickness.

When choosing sports, of course, choose some sports that you are good at and willing to do them. Don't choose some sports which over your level or you end up by hating them.

When you do any sports, there are many rules that you have to follow. First, you have to do a warm up exercise. Second, if you are not too familiar with that sport, you can ask somebody to teach you. Maybe you can have lessons with a coach to teach you the skills.

My friend Terry

In my reader book "Tom Sawyer", Tom was very naughty because he always stole things. But he was very clever to escape from his Auntie Polly.

Among my friends, Terry is very naughty too but he is very clever and I think he is even more clever than Tom. He is a happy person, or I should say he has an active, naughty personality. His weakness is Chinese language but he is very good at sports especially running. So when the Chinese lessons start, he will talk to the students around him and sometimes laugh loudly. The teacher is always angry and tells him to stand in the corner. He would say" I like to talk and this is none of your business." The teacher cannot control him.

On one occasion the Chinese teacher made a mistake. He said" Those who do not go to school please raise their hands up!" The whole class laughs and Terry laugh the loudest of all. He also told other classes about that. So from now when the Chinese lessons begin, Terry will repeatedly say this joke and the lesson can't commence. Terry is clever because he knows that the teacher will not punish him too harshly so he always disturbs other students.

When I was in Ying Wa Primary School, Terry always made fun with others like making a silly song to insult others and made others angry. He is a bit crazy because he is willing to see others people angry, then he is going to laugh.

I don't like him and the teachers don't like him either. Although he is very clever, his manner is not good so some of the classmates dislike him. I hope he can be more polite to everyone and not make fun with others.

A letter to an American friend

Dear Peter

How's your life in America? Our Chinese New Year is coming and this year is the year of the tiger!

There are many traditional customs during this festival. Let me tell you a few of them. Every Chinese New Year we will greet our relatives and friends and we always say" Congratulations and be prosperous" and " Happy New Year". Children, teenagers and unmarried adults can get red packets from married couples. Red packets which contain lucky money. This is the most exciting thing because we can use lucky money to buy our favourite video games.( Except the red packets that our parents give to us. We usually put them under our pillows and they symbolise that our parents protect us) Also, after receiving red packets, we will have a celebration lunch or dinner together.

The streets will be very crowded because there will be lion dances, dragon dances, firecrackers and other activities. The perfomances are wonderful and they attract people to see them.

We will buy wall posters with Chinese New Year greetings before the New Year. Wall posters can bring you luck and health in the coming year. They are all red and gold in colour because red is a lucky colour. Gold means wealth. We will eat nian gao, a sweet cake which is red in colour. The taste of nian gao is good but parents always advise us not to eat too much because it is not too healthy. We will eat peanuts and candies as well.

We are going to buy new shoes and clothes in red colour because they have two meanings. Firstly, red stands for luck so we will have will be luck in coming year. Secondly, we wear new shoes and new clothes which can wash away the bad luck of the previous year.

This is only some of the information about the Chinese New Year traditional customs. I hope you will know more about that .

It is late and I have to stop writting. Please reply to me and tell me about you life in America! See you soon!

Best wishes

A Building collapses in Hung Hom

A very old building collasped at 45J Ma Tau Wah Road , Hung Hom yesterday and it lead to the death of four people and others injured. The chief excutive Donald Tsang came to Hung Hom to inspect the site.

According to the news reports, the building collasped at around 1:55p.m. and some of the residents of the building were buried under rubble. However, several lucky residents were resued by the firemem.

The Legislative Council held a meeting to discuss the matter. They found that the building was too old and it was lack of maintenance that could have led to this disaster. It seems nobody was willing or able to pay money to repair the structure of the building because they can't afford to do so.

The government said they would check all buildings in Hong Kong that are over 30 years old to prevent further disasters.

My opinion:

The government should check all old buildings immediately to prevent other buildings collasping. The Urban Renewal Aurthority should demolish all dangerous and old buildings that pose a threat. They should also compensate or help residents who have lost everything!

The New Railway

The new railway will be built if the funding is approved by the goverment. Some people agree and some disagree. If the new railway is built, there are lots of benfits to Hong Kong.

However, the Choi Yuan villagers are not happy because they have to move to the other places to live since their homes will be demolished by the government. The government promised the property owner that they will recieve proper conpensation.

But jobless people may get a chance of employment because the project creates 10,000 jobs. the general public can go to Shum Jun faster by using the new railway.Hong Kong tourism will benfit and the economy will improve because more people from Shung Jun will come to Hong Kong to buy propertys and goods .

Conclusion:
There are pros and cons for building the new railway. The costs are tremendous but it will give us a convenient and fast link with mainland China so I agree to build the new railway.

My Birthday and Christmas

My birthday was on the 23rd December and I had a celebration with my friends and my parents. I woke up in the moring and found a present on my desk. It was square shaped and it was quite big. I didn't know what it was and I went to the dining room and opened my PS3 and started to play the game.

My maid suddenly appeared and said" Happy birthday" and she gave me a "dairy chocolate" as a birthday present. I was delighted because I like to eat this chocolate very much. I opened the square shaped present and found that it was a Wii, a machine which is similar to PS3. Then, my friend Thomas came and we went to play badminton. We had a competiton but unfortunately I lost because his badminton skill is better than mine.

At noon, my friends came and we decided to go to Ocean Park to have fun. We took public transport, which was about 45 minutes to get there. We rode on many thrilling machines, except the rollercoasters because it looked frightening and I didn't want to ride on it. I liked the "pirate boat" most because it moved quite fast and I liked the feeling, my friends made a lot of sounds like "Oww!". I thought they were scared!

We didn't take the cable car in Ocean Park because there was a new transportation connecting the whole of Ocean Park. It was the Ocean Express. We took the trian and it seemed that we were actually in the ocean watching different kinds living things. Lastly, we went to visit the pandas but only one panda appeared. It was cute and lovely. I wish I could have touched it .

We went back home and my mum bought sushi for dinner. It was yummy and everyone liked it and the sushi was eaten within 10 minutes. Then we played the Wii and every one enjoyed it because it was wonderful and exciting. My friends nearly broke the television with the Wii control machine because they were too concentrated on the game. They paid full attention to the game so did I. Thomas won the most games and others also won several times. I regrat to inform you that I won the least. My friends didn't want to leave and one of them even wanted to play the whole night because they thought it was fantastic and they thought there was no reason to leave !! Lastly, they gave me many presents and nearly all of them were chocolates. I would not forget the moments we enjoyed!!! When I unwrapped the last present, I found that there were four books inside and the book covers were so colourful so I wanted to read immediately but it was too late and I had to go to bed.

I am now thirteen years old and I hope I can be a matural person!

Christmas was shortly after my birthday and my cousin came to my house and played with me. Because I had exam after Christmas so there weren't many special activities during the holiday. We had ordinary activities and the only special activity was that we had a barbecue at my friend's club where we had chicken wings, steaks, sausages, fish balls and seafood, they tasted delicious and I ate too much so I didn't feel very well. Fortunately, it was only tempory. After the barbecue we played badminton at the club house and of course I won every time!! We also played Wii at his house and ate dinner there too. I enjoyed that day.

After Christmas I had dinner with my grandparents. Later on, I had my exams and it lasted for 9 days. It was a nightmare and you know every student doesn't like exams or tests. There were also lots of homework to do during Chirstmas time but I have already done it. We have to recite " Homework, Oh homework" this poem which I like very much because it shows how students hate homework and how they feel about its. The poem is brilliant for all of us!

Homework Oh Homework
I hate you, you stink
I wish I could away in the sink
If only a bomb would explode you to bits
Homework oh Homework
You are giving me fits!

This is one of the stanzas and I like the poem and I enjoy to recite it!
I hope I am able to read it beautifully in front of my class and get high marks in the oral test same as other subjects!!!!!!!!!
